New Developments and Regeneration

New developments underway offer an exciting opportunity to develop Wolverhampton into a modern and mature city for the 21st Century. Multi-million pound investments will improve the retail and leisure offering along with an enhanced transport gateway and more City Centre homes.

The Interchange

Wolverhampton Transport Interchange will be the city's £175 million transport hub - a showcase facility where road, rail, bus and metro services come together at a single city location.  Neptune Developments is the council’s development partner.

Phase 1 is currently underway and is scheduled to finish in the summer  of 2011. Demolishing and rebuilding of the bus station is more or less complete along with the development of commercial space.

Phase 2 is the remodelling of the train station to include new parking complemented by a range of new offices, shops, cafes’, bars and restaurants.  Plans are currently being reassessed due to the economic climate, but it is hoped the new scheme would include hotels and a series of new squares and landscaped areas.

Royal Hospital Scheme / Tesco

Tesco has recently revealed its plans for the redevelopment of the landmark Grade II listed Royal Hospital site, which will see the historic buildings retained along with a new 140,000 sq ft store located off the Bilston Road in the All Saints area.

Other plans for the site include homes and a shop and office block at the corner of the ring road at St George's and it is anticipated that the scheme would creat 600 jobs.

Molineux Stadium

Home of Wolverhampton Wanderers is set to be transformed into a 50,000-capacity stadium under an ambitious four stage redevelopment.  The initial phase will cost £16m and is due to start in May 2011 when the Premier League season ends.  The Stan Cullis stand will be demolished and replaced with an extended two tier stand to be ready at the start of next season

In the second phase, the Steve Bull stand would also be demolished and re-built.  The proposals also include a new store, hospitality suites, cafe, museum and a disabled supporter’s lounge.

Hilton Hotel

Hilton Hotels is to have a presence in Wolverhampton, with a £15 million development within the City Centre’s Western Quarter.

The 130-bed scheme will be delivered under the Hampton by Hilton brand.  Developers of the site, Cordwell Leisure, remain in on-going talks with the city council and Hilton Hotel to secure the scheme.

Canalside Quarter

This former industrial area northeast of the city centre is to be comprehensively regenerated for a variety of uses over the course of the next 10 years.  Already complete is the Southbank development consisting of 212 apartments built around an 18th century corn mill and the Victoria Hall student accommodation.

The Bluebrick Bistro and Bar and 81 bedroom five-storey Premier Inn is located nearby in a newly created £30 million mixed use scheme which includes the restoration of the 19th Century Low Level station – built of striking blue bricks.  Interest has been expressed in the building although there is no occupier at present.

The Springfield Brewery will also be redeveloped when market conditions allow making way for 300 new homes, some office and retail developments.

Magistrates Court

A new £36 million Magistrate’s Court has been approved and preparatory works have been carried out so that work can proceed quickly once funding is agreed by Her Majesty’s Court Service.  The development on the corner of Darlington Street and Ring Road St Mark’s will replace the existing magistrate’s court in North Street.  The five-storey, 100,000 sq ft building would have 15 courtrooms, offices, secure accommodation for magistrates and judges, a staff car park, custody area and waiting rooms.

Future Plans

Planned regeneration in and around the city centre includes the development of Raglan Street for a major supermarket; the redevelopment of the Royal Hospital site and the redevelopment of the former Sunbeam Factory by Urban Splash.
